Indian fashion can finally claim to have arrived on the international scene, especially when fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld pays an ode to desi styles and trends.
Mumbai arrived in Paris, as the renowned designer presented his Paris-Bombay collection during the Metiers D'Art show for fashion house Chanel in Paris on Tuesday. The pre-fall collection was replete with Indian-styled silhouettes, prints, accessories and jewellery. Combining ethnic lines, fabrics and motifs with western patterns, silhouette and structure, Lagerfeld paid homage to the Indian design landscape as well as to Chanel workshops.
Not only were there more than a few Indian faces featured in the model lineup but the evening also saw some well-known Indian celebrities in the audience. Actor and India's style icon Sonam Kapoor attended the show wearing a black and white dress from Chanel's spring 2012 collection, while internationally acclaimed Freida Pinto, a Chanel fan, chose to attend the event dressed in a blue number also from the label's spring 2012 collection. The young stars came together for a picture-perfect finish.
First it was the Gaultier show with a dominant Indian influence, it was then the Hermes sari, recently Bottega Veneta launched its Indian-inspired clutch and minaudieres and finally Chanel's ode to Indian silhouettes; it's a proud moment for Indian fashion. The maestro transformed anarkali kurtas, Maharaja coats and saris into flowy tunics, structured dresses and sari gowns. Models sashayed down the runway in churidaar pants, achkan style dresses and dhoti skirts that were teamed with tweed jackets
